Teaching Philosophy

News Presentation

This course teaches the importance of storytelling across different media. In this class students learn how to present the news in video, print, and online to enhance their articles and features.

Multiplatform News

This class is a “Capstone course for news production in print, online, and broadcast environments.” This is a converged, working newsroom where senior journalism students refine their news gathering and reporting skills and use them in a multi-platform environment.

Broadcast News

This class is designed to teach students broadcast news writing, shooting, and production. The emphasis is on storytelling and learning relevant skills in order to effectively convey their stories through video news packages.

News Writing

An introduction to news writing, this course teaches journalism basics to students, with emphasis on writing, AP Style, and interviewing.

News Feature Writing and Reporting

The main purpose of this course is build on skills learned in 019:098 and prepare you for your next step, be it an investigative journalism or working at a newspaper. Primarily, this course will focus on writing and reporting feature news stories (using characters and narrative to create an informative, compelling storyline). In reporting, the emphasis is on thoroughness, originality and precision.

In writing, we will develop your ability to write clearly and concisely, while stressing vivid description and compelling narratives.

The course will begin with a refresher course of beginning reporting before moving into an in-depth discussion of establishing beats, generating story ideas, dealing with news issues, and generally moving beyond the standard “spot news” reporting.
